UX/UI Designer

The company:

At Inventables, we believe that it is currently too difficult for designers, artists, and inventors to source materials. To solve this problem, we are building an “Innovator’s Hardware Store” that sells hard to find materials along with the basics needed to complete a project.  We believe making it easy to order the right materials will drive people to find the best solution rather than the available solution. Our ultimate goal is to make product development more inspiring, easier to do and, most of all, fun. We are looking for a talented individual that is excited about helping us achieve this goal.

The opportunity:

As our UX/UI Designer, you will be asked to create very easy to use, conversion minded designs. We’re looking for someone that is going to dig in and create an experience that makes our web platform legendary because it looks great and new customers consider the design to be obvious. While we will expect you to know the ins and outs of HTML 5, CSS 3 and cross-browser compatibility issues, this will not be a code monkey job. You’ll be running the UI/UX show which will include: brainstorming design and usability options, building simple wire frames, delivering clean and elegant HTML/CSS, A-B testing, and conducting usability tests.

We have ideas for how our features might look good—you know how to design them so we get unsolicited calls about how amazing the site is.

About you:

You are passionate about building user experiences that get out of the way. You probably have experience building a least one three-dimensional object, but these days your primary focus is on crafting user interfaces for the web. You think the best interfaces are the ones that get out of the way and let people do their work, not necessarily the ones that grab the most attention. You’re constantly finding the sweet spot between beauty and usability; you know users are impatient and that you don’t have much time to impress them. When someone asks you how you’d design something, your mind is instantly flooded with ideas and you can begin to sketch them out in minutes, not hours. You’re as comfortable drawing on paper napkins as you are throwing layers around in Adobe Creative Suite 5, and you possess an uncanny ability to hone in on only the most usable of ideas. You understand that design on the web is iterative and we’re optimizing for the best customer experience. You feed off the energy and enthusiasm of others and love the challenge of building a great user experience from inception to delivery.

Requirements:

1. 2+ years experience with web-oriented graphic design.
2. Working knowledge of HTML/CSS standards, cross-browser compatibility, web fonts, and image optimization techniques.
3. Basic javascript proficiency (we don’t need you to write custom scripts, but you should be comfortable with jQuery).
4. Strong understanding of web application usability and experience conducting usability tests.
5. Experience with AB testing ideally with an eCommerce company
6. A portfolio representative of previous web design projects you’ve worked on.

A commitment to rational thinking - Decisions are based on logic and reason instead of emotions or intuition.

Responsibility - We take ownership over the outcome. We share the entrepreneurial spirit and play to win.

Excellence - As individuals, we have higher expectations for ourselves than Inventables has for us. We are committed to personal excellence and self improvement.

Curiosity - We are curious people that are always learning about new things and investigating new areas: everything from buying novel products at the grocery store to exploring new information technology.
